The recently concluded 2024 Singapore-Malaysia Harmony Club Xiangqi Team Tournament took place on 28th December 2024 at Choa Chu Kang Community Club, bringing together a total of 20 teams from Singapore and Malaysia. This cross-border event was organized with the aim of fostering friendship and camaraderie between the 2 countries.
After 8 intense rounds of high quality matches, the “Lion City Xiangqi Friends” team, comprising predominantly of SIXGA EXCO members, clinched the championship title after emerging victorious in the finals against the Batu Pahat team. Mr Lin Zicong from the team also clinched the tournament’s top scorer award.
The event was further elevated by the presence of Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Gan Kim Yong, who graced the occasion to show his support for the development of Xiangqi in Singapore.
Yesterday, I had the privilege of visiting 汪老师 Chinese Tuition Centre to introduce the ancient and strategic Chinese board game of Xiangqi (Chinese Chess) to a group of young students, ranging from 7 to 16 years old. As a SEA Games Champion and Xiangqi International Grandmaster, I was excited to share my knowledge and passion for this incredible game with the next generation.
It was truly a fruitful experience. For many of these students, this was their first introduction to Xiangqi. Throughout the session, I was able to guide them through the basic rules and strategies of the game, while also sharing stories about its rich history and cultural significance. Seeing their eyes light up as they grasped the concepts and began to enjoy the game was incredibly rewarding.
Xiangqi is not just a game; it’s a tool that helps develop critical thinking, concentration, and strategic planning, all of which are important skills for young minds to nurture. By engaging with Xiangqi, students also gain a deeper appreciation for Chinese culture and heritage.
This event is part of my ongoing efforts to promote Xiangqi to younger audiences and make it accessible to all. It is my hope that through such activities, we can inspire more students to take an interest in Xiangqi, further developing the game and preserving this wonderful tradition.
I would like to thank 汪老师 and all the students for their enthusiasm and participation. Together, we are shaping the future of Xiangqi in Singapore!
Let’s continue to spread the love for Xiangqi and bring this game to even more people. Stay tuned for more exciting Xiangqi events coming soon!
